RELAXATION RESPONSE PROGRAM:
2535 Airport Rd. Colorado Springs CO. 80910

The relaxation response discovered by the inspirational author and Harvard cardiologist Herbert Benson, M.D. represents a "hard-wired" antidote to the flight or fight response. Briefly stated, the relaxation response is defined as the response that is opposite of the "fight-or-fight" or stress response. It is characterized by the following:

  • I. Decreased metabolism, heart rate, blood pressure, and rate of breathing
  • II. A decrease or "calming" in brain activity
  • III. An increase in attention and decision-making functions of the brain
  • IV. Changes in gene activity that are the opposite of those associated with stress
The purpose of the program is to automatically elicit/bring out a response in participants that will bring peace and calm. The relaxation response consists of breathing exercises, visualization techniques, prayer and meditation and is responsible for: lowering blood pressure, decreasing heart rate, and reducing stress levels.

Researched Based Training Program:

Soldiers perform at their best when they are educated, trained, and given the opportunity to practice what they have been trained to do. The aim of the WRRC is to give participants the tools and materials to elicit their own relaxation response. This approach is modeled after the home improvement concept; where soldiers come to the WRRC, get to experience the feeling of the relaxation response (tools), and receive education and training (materials) on eliciting the response system, take it to their homes and ªfixº the problem.
